Monteargentario, Tuscany’s natural lagoon
A natural lagoon is one of those inexplicable masterpieces of Mother Nature that we see. In Italy, we have the beautiful Venice, but it is, in part, man-made. Then there is a natural lagoon, in Tuscany, known by the name of: Monteargentario.
You have hardly ever heard of it. This is a favourite destination for VIPs from show business, sports and fashion. It can be seen in many films and period films. Monteargentario is, by definition, the Rimini of Tuscany.
The beaches are among the main attractions that tend to attract millions of tourists, both Italian and foreign. Added to this is beautiful vegetation, culture, fun and recreational activities. The coast, the sea and its seabed are much visited for the boat trips that can be made during the summer.
What is the most beautiful place in Monteargentario?
A difficult question to answer. There are many people who, when deciding on a holiday in Monteargentario, look for information about this area. However, it is not possible to say that there is only one beautiful place.
The Argentario area is formed by a large promontory and then by some ‘tomboli’ that have been created by the transport of debris by sea currents. Since it is a lagoon, it is also possible to see and visit some islets in addition to the strips of land that connect Monteargentario to the mainland.
This lagoon is formed by:
– Porto Santo Stefano
– Giannella
– Terrarossa
– Orbetello
– Monte Argentario or Promontory of Monte Argentario
– Cala Piccola
– Lo Sbarcatello
– Ansedonia
Even Magliano in Toscana, Giglio Island and Capalbio belong to the Argentario.
Each of them has natural beauties that leave one breathless. For example, Porto Ercole has a fishing village that is magnificent. Characteristic in its architecture. Even the streets, which you walk along, are finished in a special way. Then there is the area of Porto Ercole Vecchia, which is the historic centre.
In the area of Ansedonia, which is the coastal part on dry land, from where the Feniglia tombolo for Monteargentario starts, there are the remains of the Roman ‘lost’ city of Cosa. While in Orbetello, in its lagoon, you can admire pink flamingos.
Among the beautiful beaches in Monteargentario are:
– Acqua Dolce beach in Porto Ercole
– Cannelle
– Cala del Gesso
– Giannella, Argentario
So this is an area that becomes a wonderful place in summer. Rich in tourism, but also with many things to do. The natural beauty is then a free show you should never miss.
Nobody runs after us, we take our time
The Argentario is a place that can be visited all year round. It is true that summer is the time when the movida explodes. The beaches fill up and there are many recreational activities, such as shows and parties in the piazza. However, we see that this is a place that retains a calm and placid spirit. There is an attempt to respect nature and consequently it is not an ‘Ibiza-style’ tourist resort.
The best months to visit are from mid-May to the end of June and then from September to October. At least for those who want to enjoy the beaches. However, on a naturist level, it can be visited all year round. In fact, it is organised in such a way as to be able to guarantee attractions on an entertainment level as well.
The Argentario is not a small area, even though it is a lagoon and islet. Some areas can be visited on foot or by bicycle. We see, however, that it is very well connected. So take your time to visit it. Monteargentario is very well suited for a long holiday, but also for short periods or for weekend fun.
The Argentario archipelago in Tuscany has a timeless charm. It contains several small towns, such as Orbetello, which became a very important commercial and economic point. The archaeological sites that have been discovered suggest that it was founded in pre-Roman times.
In some ways we see that the Roman Empire really had “good taste” in the choice of its colonies. However, it is true that this very area is full of charm, vegetation and recreational activities that are very enjoyable for the very young.
Orbetello is famous for its nature reserve, declared a WWF oasis. There are many traditional Tuscan monuments and architecture. One of the destinations to put among the travel ideas when you don’t know where to go.
The town is visited by tourists in both winter and summer. To meet the continuous demand, the proposal of a holiday home remains the favourite of many people. So if you want to have a good experience, then it is really advisable to think about booking a holiday home and choose whether it faces the sea or is in the middle of nature.
The heart of Argentario
The Argentario archipelago has a beating heart that is Orbetello. A charming village suspended between sea and land, it stands on the small strip of land that extends into the lagoon of the little village.
In the past it was known as the military citadel. In its history there are Etruscan, Roman, pirate and medieval domains. Always under the attention of the market and maritime world. Today it is a favourite destination for Tuscans, but it receives and hosts many tourists from all over the world.
The green heart of the Tuscan Sea, anyone who visits is unlikely not to fall in love with it. Whether in winter or summer, it still hides splendid places to visit.
Visiting Orbetello means choosing between maritime, cultural and nature tours. You enter the town through the Medinaceli gate to arrive directly in Piazza IV Novembre.
The main monuments include the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, the Duomo, the municipal library and the pediment of the temple of Talamone. Nearby we find the Palazzo di Spagna, also called the Pavilion, where there is the Clock Tower. It ends with a visit to the Church of San Francesco di Paola.
Nature and lagoon winking at you
When booking a holiday home in Orbetello you should choose a house that overlooks the lagoon and the sea. The most interesting areas are the Lungolaguna di Levante, from where you can see the shore of the Etruscan wall. This area is also home to the Municipal Archaeological Museum.
Then the Orbetello lagoon, which is divided by the Tombolo della Giannella and Feniglia. Among the monuments in these areas are the salt pans and the Fort of the salt pans, where you will then reach the forest reserve and the magnificent pine forest present.
The sea is obviously one of the characteristics of the lagoon, but it is actually an intense blue, with waters that become almost black on the horizon. In winter it becomes very characteristic because the vegetation intensifies and the sun colours the waters with a thousand warm nuances. Postcard-perfect landscapes.
