Be careful, you could lose your heart to Burano!

Who doesn’t know Venice and its lagoon? The very fact of how Venice came into being and was built is beyond our imagination. The city stands on wooden beams? Along with palaces, bridges and more – unimaginable, yet true. And it continues in a similar vein.

Burano and some information

How do you get to Burano? Ferries run to all the islands, and the number 12 will take you to Burano.

What to see?

Definitely the museum – Burano is home to the world-famous lace, which you can also buy in small shops. There is a lovely story behind it. A sailor in love went to sea. He promised his beloved that he would marry her. On the way, a siren tried to seduce him, but he remained faithful to his love. The sea maiden liked this so much that she turned the edge of a wave, where foam forms, into lace.

The small terraced houses are colourful – with a kitchen downstairs and a bedroom upstairs, which is how they were originally built. Another legend tells that they were painted in bright colours (similar to Cinque Terre) so that fishermen could find their homes more easily in foggy weather after a long stay at sea.

There are countless bars and restaurants, and you are often handed a menu as you walk by. Small objects made of Murano glass are also blown directly in the shop on request, and handmade casual clothing and costume jewellery round off the experience. The leaning bell tower is being renovated, and although there are no hotels, many of the small colourful houses are available to rent.

What is there to see and what can you take home with you?

Even a walk along the canals is a unique experience. It is best to book an expert who can show you the hidden corners and explain things to you – such as the most famous house in Burano, Casa Bepi. A short or longer trip to Murano and Venice is also wonderful. Speaking of which, it’s hard to believe because the town is always full, but there are over 2,000 residents.
